I had Bennett in to the doc for his two year checkup. Besides the talking, he is doing very good with everything else developmentally. He is getting better at the talking though little by little. Today for instance he was downstairs and started crying while I was upstairs feeding Ashley. When he came up I said what happened and he said "ouh" and when I asked him where it hurt he showed me his foot so apparently he stepped on something. It was so great though that I knew he was hurt instead of just whining! I can't wait until he can tell me everything that is wrong or what he wants!
His weight is 26.12 lb which is in the 31% and his height is 34 inches which is in the 52%. He was 22.5 lb at his one year checkup - chunky until he starting walking. Now we can't keep any weight on him since he's only gained 4 pounds in the last year (wish I could say the same thing about me!)
We're slowly working on potty training. When he sits on it for Mike or Kristen, he will almost always go. Not for me though. I can't get him to stay sitting even when I bribe him. I told Kristen she will have to move in with me this summer and get him trained since he seems to listen to her better than me. Almost every time he's over at my mom's house she'll make him go and he will for her.
I am having some issues with him though. He doesn't listen to me! I can say no and he wouldn't stop what he's doing. Mike or someone in my family can tell him no and he'll usually stop right away. He really knows how to play me and it's getting hard - I feel like all I'm doing is telling him no, stop that etc. He also knows to do this naughty stuff when I'm tending to Ashley. I'm afraid that the time-out chair isn't even going to phase him anymore soon since I feel like I have to put him in it so often. Any tips or advice are welcome.
(Betty White is distracting in the background haha)
That movie made me cry...The Lost Valentine, was it? But seriously, the two pictures are so cute!
ReplyDeleteI watched about 2 minutes of it before I got busy and distracted and it just became background noise
ReplyDeleteHow many words can he say?
ReplyDeleteOne idea that works well for Stryker is counting to three. When we began to use this, we gave him a spanking if he did not do what we were asking by the count of 3. (Or if he did not at least START to do what we wanted.) You could also give a time-out after the count of 3, but I don't think that would be as effective. I like this method because once it starts working, you can just keep doing whatever you're doing, and say, "One..." and the kid will usually obey.
We have been having some trouble with Peytra being defiant, too. The other night, I told her to pick up her toys, and she said, "No." I gave her a spanking on the hand and told her again. She still said, "No." So I put her on time-out. She screamed the whole time, and after a few minutes, I brought her over to the toys and told her again to pick them up. She just kept screaming, so we repeated the time-out over and over for the next half-hour with her screaming the whole time. Finally, I said, "You're acting like a baby, and it's bedtime for babies." I got her ready for bed, and read her books. She stopped screaming immediately when I started reading. After the books, I said, "Tomorrow, you'll pick up your toys." She nodded. So I said, "Do you want to pick them up NOW?" She nodded, and then she actually did it. What a power struggle! But she's been an angel all week since then. I don't know if that's coincidence or not. But whatever tactic you use, I think immediate consistent consequences are the key. If the kid knows that he/she can keep playing for even one more minute, the delayed consequences might be worth it to him/her.
You have to give consequences EVERY time, or he will learn that sometimes he can get away with stuff. Therefore, he will try every time to get away with it, hoping for no consequences.
I think you said once that you don't do a lot of reading, but I definitely recommend Dr. James Dobson's books. He's a Christian author and founder of Focus on the Family who has a lot of books on raising children. Some to check out from your library: The Strong-Willed Child, Bringing up Boys, and Bringing up Girls.
When do you want me to move in? Anytime is fine! :)
ReplyDeleteWhen did you start doing the time-out chair with Bennet? Gabriel is starting to get more defiant and pretty soon we're going to have to get serious about discipline tactics.
ReplyDeleteKay - including animal sounds and stuff like that, he probably says maybe 30. Words he uses on a daily basis are Mama, ohoh, uhuh, Hi, Bye, done. My doctor said that since I feel it has improved alittle bit in the last month that we will wait anotherr 3-4 months and if he's not talking lots more we would think about speech therpy. I'm not too worried about it, it's just annoying that I never know what he wants or why he's whinning.
ReplyDeleteAlso Kay, I tried the 1,2,3 thing tonight and surprisingly it seemed to work! At least for tonight.
And Christina, we started the time out chair about 2 months ago (off & on). It does work but right now it's in the living room so I'm thinking that we need to move it because he does sit in it like he's supposed to, but since the TV is still on, I don't think it's much of a punishment except for the fact that he has to sit there for 2 minutes.
Oh and Kristen, Ashley is crying right now so if you want to move in tonight still that'd be fine with me :-)
ReplyDeleteAnd a side note, Kristen got Bennett to go potty today and so did I!!!
