Back to School - Ashley

Last Monday the kids started school!  We had such a great summer and it was sad to see it end.  BUT, boy did my kids need to get back to school and get separated from each other.

Ashley is in Kindergarten and she was very ready for it.  She was very excited to go and did really well with me dropping her off.  She was embarrassed when I tried to take a picture of her in her classroom, so I had to sneak one from the back when she wasn't looking.  I was literally in her room with her for 2 minutes and she sitting at the table and ready to work.  (We had a back to school lunch the day before for the kids to bring their supplies to the room and the parents to have a meeting.)  I know she is going to do great.  She loves homework and projects and table-work.  She'll have a great time playing too obviously, but she is very willing to learn.

She is reading already pretty good on her own.  She can read Easy Reader and Level 1 books pretty much on her own.  She picked up reading from Bennett learning....he would bring flashcards home in K and 1st and she would hear him doing it and just picked it up last year.  She's very good at sounding words out too besides just reading the sight words.  Mike and I didn't push reading on her and honestly, we haven't really even helped her with it very much.  I'm very proud at what she is learning, but I fear that she might get too far ahead of the rest of the class.  Other than reading though, I have no clue what her strong subjects will be.

Ashley is very strong-willed so if she does have a problem this year at school, I know for a fact it will have something to do with this.  If she doesn't want to do something, she will try to put up a fight and not do it.  (Her teacher knows better though and will get her to do it - they already had one instance like this last week.)  And she also doesn't like to make mistakes and gets upset if she writes a number 4 wrong or doesn't spell her name perfectly.

Her class has 13 kids - 4 girls and 9 boys.  Most of these 13 were in her preschool class so she has really good friends already.  She almost has two weeks done already and she's doing great.  She let me take her into her classroom on the first day and since then, I drop her and Bennett off at the door and she is going into school on her own.  My baby is such a big kid.

We had to trace her hands and legs and then bring in an outfit to make these life-sized Kindergartners.  They are hanging in the hallway at school and I took a picture of Ashley's to send to Mike.  When I showed Ashley that I took a picture of her she said "Why do my legs look so fat".  Sigh....

  1. That's impressive that she pretty much taught herself to read! What a smart girl!
